Sticks and Stones
So, no immediate response from Samuel L. Jackson. Of course, I don’t exactly expect a response. After all, he was probably talking to bloggers who have one of those things. You know… an audience. Here I am, blogging away at bigsimon.com, and really don’t get more than five to ten hits a day. Not very much in the grand scheme of things, you see, so a small potato like myself is probably not going to rub him the wrong way. This, of course, is too bad. I really do like Jackson, even if I’m not always impressed with the parts he takes.
But this post isn’t about him. This is about me going relatively bonkers. See, I did something rather odd a little bit ago – those of you keeping up with my status posts on Twitter and Facebook already know. With all this work toward improving myself, I went and bought a pair of escrima sticks from Cold Steel. For those who don’t know what escrima (or “eskrima”) is, well, it’s a Filipino martial art focusing on stick fighting techniques. An escrima student learns various one- and two-stick techniques for self-defense.
Now here’s the odd part. I have no escrima traning. There is nowhere nearby to get escrima training. There’s no justifiable reason for me to have made this purchase, but I did because I thought it might be easy enough to pick up some of the basic techniques and turn them into part of my workout. Now, I’m not going to pretend I’ll have any idea what I’m doing, as far as self-defense goes, but swinging a couple sticks around, and beating on a target dummy made out of old, used tires could burn a calorie or two, especially if it’s done every morning. Add that in to the shovelgloving and the walking (hopefully I’ll be walking again this week, provided those shoes finally come in!), and maybe the weight loss and general improvement in my fitness level will start to pick up.
Maybe.
But even if it doesn’t, it looks like it’ll be fun.
