All I Needed Was Incentive…

… and now I have it.  Incentive, that is, to buy an iPhone.  Now, I’m not going to rush out to the local AT&T Wireless store, drool over their selection of high-powered gadgets, pick just the right model for my tastes, and drop down a Visa or Mastercard for all that and a side of fries any time soon, but the iPhone just continues to impress.  Not only does it have multiple practical uses, but now my favorite time waster is able to be played on the handheld device.

That’s right, I’m talking about City of Heroes.

The graphics aren’t that great, and it only plays about about 10 frames per second, but it would be useful for use during some light role-playing, or perhaps a little Consignment House (or Black Market) day trading.  I don’t know whether there would be that much in the way of actual functionality outside of those two uses – in fact, I’m fairly certain there wouldn’t be.  But that doesn’t change the coolness factor, the sheer power of the related geekgasm, and the newly found desire to waste far too much cash procuring a high powered widget that really adds nothing to my day to day life.

For the record, this feat is absolutely not one of my own.  TurmoilX from the City of Heroes Official Forums pulled it off; I’m just drooling over the idea here.   Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. An active City of Heroes account.
  2. A computer that will play said account, with at least 1GB RAM.
  3. A wireless network.
  4. An iPhone (either 1st or 2nd generation will work) or an iPod Touch.
  5. An iTunes account.
  6. A fully charged battery, as it just drinks juice (so be prepared!)
  7. The latest version of TightVNC.

Once you’ve got all that, it’s a simple matter of installing TightVNC on your computer, you’ll need to buy Mocha VNC from the iTunes App Store, and run it, connecting over your wireless network to the virtual network server (hosted on your computer).  Like I said, the original poster said it doesn’t run really well – he had to lower his resolution and graphics settings to the bare minimum – but for general chatiness and some auction house work, it should be fine.

Pseudogeek indeed.
